Football & Fitness
Football today is a fast-paced, high-energy sport and regardless of what stage you are at in your career, you will need to engage in a fitness programme that helps you achieve the stamina and strength required for the rigours of the modern day football game. Pre season is designed to prepare you for the season ahead, with early starts, double sessions, lots of running and team games that replicate match situations. I started playing football when I was 7 years old at Sheffield Rangers, from there I signed for Sheffield United when I was 8. I stayed at Sheffield United for 8 years until I was 16 to then move on to Scunthorpe United. I signed a two year scholarship which means you play for the clubs youth team for two season. As my two years as a youth team player came to an end I was offered a one year professional contract. At the time my manager was Brian laws and his assistant Russ Wilcox. Brian laws’s style of pre season was a lot of fitness test and hard running, a lot of relay training, sprinting for 40 meters and rest whilst your partner does the same. This type of training is related to replica Sprints as the average player runs about 10-12km in a game but it’s never long-distance plodding. It is always change of direction, jumping up for headers or going into tackles, so we try to make it as specific to the game as possible. You look at how much the game has changed over the last six years – the total distance is coming down but high-speed running distances are going up.
